Gloves on

GlovesWith temperatures at least above zero today I cleared a bit of space around my bench (which hasn’t had a lot of attention over recent weeks), donned a pair of gloves and knocked out a few light sets. It’s the first time I’ve used the gloves (they actually came with the bench and have been sitting in a box ever since), and it certainly made a difference when it came to gripping a rather cold bar. Off now to look at a few heating options - no doubt it gets a bit cooler around here as winter gets going.

Hey Scott,

Have you done any heavy barbell work in a while or “just” bodyweight workouts. Would be interesting to see how much strength you have lost off your max if so (I could be wrong, but would be surprised if you could up your max doing just bodyweight stuff). I can symphatize with the cold bar… Måns and I did a midnight workout at Toffe’s Gym in late October. Not on the blog yet, am behind to say the least. Going heavy in cold climates definitively gives you that cold fuzzy feeling, doesn’t it?

Kris, haven’t really pushed the heavy weights in ages - mainly bodyweight stuff. There just hasn’t been enough room to setup the rack (the height, as you originally pointed out, is the limiting factor) and I don’t really want to end up stuck in the garage under a frozen, heavy, bar. Not without a spotter anyway.

As for losing strength, I suspect I’ve lost a bit; but that it won’t take all that long to recover it. At least I hope not anyway :)

Well, that makes two of us. I whacked my back again at the end of August and took about a month off. I lost about 5 kg off my bench it seems, now training hard to get it back. :-)

4

scott i take it you’ve moved house?

dont take too long off from the heavy stuff, its taken me awhile to get strength back :/

did you find any suitable heating solutions?

5

Yeah John, moved from Edinburgh to Glasgow. I’d originally hoped to use the garage here (it’s an actual house this time) for the gym, but unfortunately it quickly turned into a storage facility instead. I’m trying to do something about that now, as there aren’t any decent gyms near here (they all seem to be full of cardio equipment and just finding a place with free weights is a challenge).

Nothing in the way of heating yet - just short workouts, lots of warm clothing, and back into a warm house :)

Kris, I hope your back is up to full strength again soon. Did the month off do it some good?

Scott, the time off got me out of the acute phase and helped me load the batteries, but my problems are unfortunately far from over. Am working out a plan of attack now, might have to forget SQ/DL PRs for a while and focus on the bench instead like so many before me. A bench specialist against his own will… with long arms to boot… How ironic. ;-)
