Deep fried culture

There’s an interesting piece on today’s BBC Scotland site, concerning the way in which the world is beginning to see the Scottish diet. Under the spotlight is the deep-fried Mars Bar (I think the Mars Bar here is known as a Milky Way in the US), which, despite a few claims to the contrary, is not exactly difficult to find.

Apart from the overall nutritional value of this concoction, the most worrying aspect of the situation must be the way in which Scotland is considered overseas. How does everyone think of Scotland - not as it used to be, but as it is now?

Scott,

Interesting read. I will also say that a lot of deep fat fried things can be found over here as well. Especially at our fair. Lets see here: Fried Oreo Cookies, Fried pickles, fried snickers bar…I’m sure there are others, but that’s what I’ve seen so far. And no I haven’t tried them.

On another note we were watching the travel channel last night and they were going through Ireland…the southern part and Dublin. WOW…the southern part of Ireland looks really beautiful. The wife told me we’ll have to make a trip over. Is Scotland as beautiful?

Fried Oreos - is nothing sacred? :)

Scotland is indeed a beautiful place. For such a small area it has a wealth of different landscapes - there’s something to keep everyone happy. Everything from long sandy beaches (a bit chilly at this time of year, but they look nice) to rugged mountains and misty green hills.

Do you get any of the Scottish shows on TV there? Perhaps one of the soaps?

When I think of Scotland I think of the landscapes, nice history, kilts, Alwyn Cosgrove, Trainspotting, The Highlander, and Mike Myers’ skit on Saturday Night Live where he says “if it’s not Scottish, it’s crap!” As for the fried candy bars and fair food, I guess heart attacks are now more portable that defibrillators. Is anyone safe?!?

Ah, Mike Myers. Do you get any real Scottish shows by any chance?

As for ‘is anyone safe’ - I noticed this yesterday. Iran has a problem with people eating too much junk food. Not the first place I would have considered.

Scott,

I believe we get the BBC on the TV, but I think that’s about it. I’m sure the travel channel will have some shows on Scotland. Hopefully I can catch them at some point.
