A bit of a shortened workout today. After spending most of the day getting used to the cool weather here (it’s been hovering just below zero for most of the day), I jumped into a few sets of rack pulls without much of a warmup.
Midway through the work sets I got a pretty uncomfortable round of oblique pain, which had become unbearable a few sets later. Time to swap the rest of the workout for a nice hot shower - hopefully it’s nothing more than a slight sprain which feels worse in the cold.
Rack pull (just above knee) 2×10@60/132, 10@100/225, 5@140/308, 7×3@160/352
Update: after a night’s sleep (and a healthy dose of vodka - but that’s another story) I realised that it’s more of a lat pain than anything. I suspect this is from straightening the bar a little between sets (think T-bar rows), and the rack pulls themselves just helped things along by hitting the obliques. As I’m not scheduled to do any more lifting until tomorrow anyway, I’ll see if another day of rest does the trick.

Glad I’m working out inside…negative 12F when I came to work this morning! Yikes!

Indeed. Be careful out there (says the guy who trained outside in late October). Hopefully it is nothing serious, midsection rips are nasty. Waking up tomorrow morning, you should be able to get some idea on how bad it is… Nothing like the day after. :-/

-12F - that’s getting down there. How cold does it get around your place Chris?
Kris, I suspect the morning will be the real test. After things got back to normal temps, I realised that the pain is a general oblique/lat thing - good news as it’s unlikely to be the rack pulls that caused it. Uncovered it, if anything. Will find out tomorrow.

ah well at least the rack pulls were good :)
hope its a big problem, like you said you’ll know tomorrow.
BTW: im not finding anything decent in terms of open source nutrition loggers, at least not yet. ill keep looking.

Scott,
it can get colder around here, but I think we are in an extreme cold spell right now. it’s supposed to warm up a bit heading into the weekend.

Do you have a longer term heating solution yet? You can’t lift in cold weather.

Thanks John. Was pretty happy with the pulls themselves; I just need to remember the thorough warm-up beforehand :)
Jon, I suspect I would’ve done the same thing in any environment. But no, I’ve got nothing long term - I haven’t found anything that a) doesn’t require mains power and b) heats a small space safely. In a small enclosed space I’m a little wary of some of the gas options.

safe to assume it was nothing serious then?

Nothing too bad - think I must’ve just lifted the bar whilst at an awkward angle. Only mild pain now, so I’ll hopefully be right for this afternoon.

Good to hear it’s not serious. I ripped a lat once, the left if memory serves, doing weighted chins (imagine that, I was a LOT lighter back in the early 90s). I probably did some kind of stretch bounce off the bottom. It was hurting for several weeks, but cleared up on its own with the usual icing. I hope you’ve had plenty of ice on yours by now… good to keep refreezable icepacks in the freezer.

how about either a vented gas heater or pellet stove?
Posted by: Jon | December 10, 2005 2:58 AM
Yeah Kris, I should grab some refreezable ice packs - the bags of frozen vegetables just aren’t the same :)
Jon, it’s the confined space I’m worried about - the only pellet stoves I’ve seen are for larger areas, such as small cabins and even houses. Will look into the idea of just getting a small one. As for the vented gas heaters, are those the ones often seen outside cafes and restaurants?

No, it would be inside the garage with a gas line running from a tank outside. You’d then vent the unit to the outside. It’s all very easy and safe.
