Whether you're enjoying a session in the home gym, local park or somewhere a little more commercial; make sure you're wearing one of these.
MMA athlete Mike Bruce, a man who is already well known for demonstrating extraordinary neck strength in his workouts (such as seated neck extensions with plates totalling his bodyweight), performs a strongman feat not seen for over 20 years (bodybuilder-turned-strongman Mike Dayton was also famous for this feat). There is a very good reason for this, as you’ll see in the video [streaming, 9.8mb .flv download].
Whatever you do, don’t try this one. Seriously.

Interesting, but slightly odd. It’s one of those excercises that doesn’t look particularly hard (watch the telly, hang by the neck, hey!) guessing it is.
Now whaat muscles does that work, the scapular ones down the back or those weird ones round the front and side.

Yeah, it’s a bit like slowing down to look at a car accident. Very unusual.
As for muscles, it’s certainly not something I’ve tried myself (nor will be trying any time soon), but I’d imagine that the muscles all around the neck are actively tensed. The upper back is quite possibly taking a fair share of the load though.

I have actually seen this stunt performed live, not by that guy but by two of my training partners. Not something I have an interest in doing myself.

Cool. I take it they’ve been training for a while.

One has been training for about 4 years the other, on and off for a lot longer. The one with shorter training time was able to hang for a long time, longer than probably all three of this guys hangs. He credits the work he does with his jaw for making it possible. He has worked up to pulling his truck with only a mouthpiece, he said that was the closest he ever came to a similar feel in his neck.
One thing, should anyone ever get dumb enough to try this, you can notice this in the video, DO NOT use a noose or slip knot. The rope needs the star fixed and preferably with the loop large enough that should you pass out, you fall out of the rope, not hang.
